Mrs. Doris Deiters, 85, of Dalton, passed away Friday, April 12, 2013, at Hamilton Medical Center.
Doris Johnson Deiters, born March 17, 1928, in Huntsville, Ala., graduated from the St. Thomas School of Nursing at Vanderbilt University with a bachelor’s in nursing and went to work at Huntsville Hospital as a surgical nurse. She left the hospital for the position of company nurse at Thiokol Chemical Corp. at the Redstone Arsenal, where she met David W. Deiters, her future husband, who was a young rocket test engineer. They lived in Huntsville, then his career took them to St. Simons Island, where the family lived for 16 years before another career shift brought them to Dalton in 1975.
Mrs. Deiters was pre-deceased by her husband, who passed away in 2000. She is survived by four children and their spouses, Mrs. Kim Deiters LaChine of Dalton, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Deiters Jr., and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Deiters, all of Atlanta, and Mr. and Mrs. Allan Symonette of Greenville, S.C. There are eight grandchildren, Mr. Boomer LaChine, Mr. David Deiters III and Misses Sarah and Lily Deiters, all of Atlanta, Mr. and Mrs. Jeb LaChine of Cleveland, Miss Maggy Deiters of Nashville, Tenn., and Masters Jack and Sam Symonette of Greenville, S.C.; one brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Johnson of Huntsville, Ala., and many extended family members and dear friends.
Mrs. Deiters had specified that she be cremated and her remains join those of her husband on St. Simons Island, which they loved so.
Her memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday in the chapel at Love Funeral Home with a gathering for all friends and family immediately following the service at the Dalton Golf and Country Club.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the scholarship fund at Phoenix High School. Mrs. Deiters, after ending her nursing career, substituted in the Whitfield County Schools and truly loved the students. It would thrill her to be able to help a student defray some of the costs of college. Please make checks payable to the Phoenix High School Scholarship Fund, memo Doris J. Deiters, and send them to Phoenix High School, Attn: Kim LaChine, 2300 Maddox Chapel Road, Dalton, GA 30721.
