Sally C. Downs, 74, of Dalton, passed away peacefully on the morning of Sunday, July 28, 2013, at her home in Dalton.
Sally was born Dec. 7, 1938, in Massachusetts and resided in Knoxville, Tenn., from 1973 to 1988 when she moved to Chattanooga, Tenn. Sally was retired from the Tennessee Valley Authority in Chattanooga. Sally moved to Dalton in 2012, where she was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. She spent much of her time in retirement caring for her grandchildren, traveling with family and friends, and bowling. Sally loved animals and spent much of her life adopting and caring for stray and abandoned animals as well as providing many hours of service to animal welfare societies.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Downs, and parents, Francis and Anita Cushing of Pittsfield, Mass.
She leaves behind a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Lisa Osterhout of Andersonville, Tenn.; daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia and Mark Sherrod of Dalton, and Susan and Andrew Liner of Knoxville, Tenn.; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Cyndi and Brian Cagle of Dunlap, Tenn.; stepson and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Summer Downs of Chattanooga, Tenn.; grandchildren, Whitney, Jay and wife Kendra, Miranda, Ragan, Sydney, Matthew, Tanner, Bailey, Emily, Justin and Hannah.
The service to honor the life of Sally C. Downs will be Saturday at noon at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Paul Williams officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Humane Society of Northwest Georgia in memory of Sally.
