Mr. Robert “Bob” Louis Griggs, 83, of Dalton, died Monday, April 1, 2013, at his residence.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Marlene Page Griggs.
Bob was born on Aug. 19, 1929, in Resaca, to William and Cora Griggs. He was the youngest of six children. He attended public schools in Dalton, and he graduated from Dalton High School. After graduation he joined the United States Marine Corps. Bob served in the Korean conflict as a sergeant. While in Korea he was severely wounded and earned a Purple Heart.
After being honorably discharged from the Marine Corps, Bob returned home to begin working at Colonial Food Stores. It was during this time that he married Marlene Page. Bob and his brother Carl then founded Southern Binders, where Bob worked until his retirement.
Bob was a Christian and an active member of Central Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon and later as an elder.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Carol Griggs; daughter, Leigh Ellen Griggs; grandson, Jonathan Griggs; brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Charlotte Griggs, all of Dalton; and nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank gracious caregivers Amanda, Aniecia, Peggy, Christina, Shirley and Linda. A special thanks to the Amedisys Hospice nurses and staff for their diligent care of Bob’s needs during his final days.
A celebration of Bob’s “home-going” will be Thursday at 4 p.m. at Central Church of Christ at 515 N. Tibbs Road in Dalton. Special ministers and family will be leading the celebration.
The family will receive friends at the church building on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m.
