Josephine Jones Souther, 84, of the Dawnville community, departed this life Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at Gordon Hospital.
She was born March 18, 1929, in Keyston, Okla., and was the daughter of the late Joe and Eunice Jones.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, George Souther, and an infant son, Alvin Souther. Additionally, preceding her in death are two brothers and a sister-in-law, James Jones, Dixie Jones and Bobby Joe Jones.
Josephine was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of Harmony Baptist Church but frequently attended Dawnville United Methodist Church. She was best known for her generosity, kindness and devotion to her family. Her happiest times were when she could be with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. One of her favorite pastimes was working with her flowers in her yard. She was known as an exceptional cook, especially for her fried chicken, homemade biscuits, homemade sausage and banana pudding. She and her son, Dwight Souther, co-owned and operated Dawnville Grocery and Hardware since 1969.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-laws, Dwight and Donna Souther, and Mark and Rhonda Souther; and daughter and son-in-law, Becky and David Dillard, all of Dalton.
She has eight grandchildren, Tera Steele, Ginger Souther, Michelle Dillard, Shannon Boyd, Jason Souther, Evan Souther, Jess Souther and Morgan Souther. She has five great-grandchildren, Alicia Brown, Austin Tibbs, Brittney Baynes, Sydney Boyd and Grace Dillard. She is also survived by two brothers and sisters-in-laws, Clinton and Theda Jones of Linden, Tenn., and Floyd and Thelma Jones of Chatsworth; a sister and brother-in-law, Lucille and Ralph Newton of Chatsworth; a sister, Christine Owens of Tacoma, Wash.; and a sister-in-law, Lillian Jones of Johnston City, Tenn.
Serving as pallbearers are Jason Souther, Jess Souther, Evan Souther, Morgan Souther, Austin Tibbs and Jason Boyd. Honorary pallbearers are Larry Addis, Lynn Addis, Sammy Souther, Jimmy Jones, LaDon Wells and Sammy Faw.
The funeral service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Josephine Souther will be held Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the Pleasant Grove Chapel of Julian Peeples Funeral Home with the Rev. Billy Willis and the Rev. John Merk officiating.
Burial will be in Deep Springs Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Julian Peeples Funeral Home today from 4 to 8 p.m.
