Margaret Strickland Thomas, 93, of Dalton, went to be with her Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at The Gardens at Royal Oaks.
She was born in Silsbee, Texas, on Aug. 16, 1919, to Hattie Land Strickland and Homer Clayton Strickland.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, R.S. Thomas, and son, Patrick Reece Thomas.
Margaret attended Texas State Women’s College in Denton, Texas, where she was a home economics major. As a young bride, she moved to Georgia and, except for brief periods, she lived in the Pleasant Grove area. She taught for many years at Pleasant Grove Elementary School. She was a homemaker, an excellent seamstress, quilter and avid reader. She loved her church, Carolyn Baptist Church, and served throughout the years as a Sunday school teacher, helped with vacation Bible school, cooked in the church kitchen, was a member of the Women’s Missionary Union and loved to stock the church’s food pantry. Perhaps her greatest love at the church was working in the church nursery with the infants. Through the years those many infants loved her and called her “Mama Margaret.”
Margaret was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Marie Thomas of Richmond Hill; daughter and son-in-law, Kay Thomas Crow and husband Chuck of Gastonia, N.C.; daughter, Jan Thomas Dunn of Hixson, Tenn.; grandchildren, Dana Crow Seay, Andy Crow, Suzanne Thomas Meadows and husband Bill, Chris Thomas Douglas and husband Mark, Joshua Dunn and wife Stephanie, and Shanda Dunn Copeland and husband Paul; great-grandchildren, Trevor and Katie Seay, Brandt Smith, Judd and Grace Douglas, Dawson Dunn, Bella Copeland, Jaden and Eli Dunn; brother-in-law, Dr. Don Thomas; sisters-in-law, Farrell Starnes and Wanda Thomas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service to honor the life of Mrs. Thomas will be Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Pleasant Grove Chapel of Julian Peeples Funeral Home with Dr. Don Thomas officiating.
