Betty Elaine Hiser Schultz, 96, of Dalton and formerly of Blackford County, Ind., passed away Friday, March 28, 2014, at Wood Dale Health and Rehabilitation.
Mrs. Schultz graduated from Hartford High School in 1938. During World War II, Betty was employed by the Department of Defense as a switchboard operator handling long-distance calls on her shift. She was assigned to Bear Field, the Army airfield at Fort Wayne, Ind., and at this time her husband Myron was serving with the army in the European Campaign.
After the war, Myron and Betty returned to Hartford City where Betty worked for Bell Telephone Co. for a few years. She also raised all varieties of animals and was a judge for rabbits, pigeons, cavies, doves, quails and various dogs.
In 1968, they moved to Caledonia, Miss., as owners and operators of a farm and later retired and moved to Dalton. Myron and Betty were married for 65 years.
Betty was the daughter of the late Frank and Mabel Hiser of rural Hartford City, Ind. Frank Hiser passed away when young. Mrs. Hiser then married Lewis B. Vallad, a prominent Hartford City businessman.
Betty was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Hartford City, Ind., and later became a member of McCaughey’s Chapel in Cohutta.
She is survived by sisters and brother-in-laws, Joan and David Rabbit of Abita Springs, La., Betty and Charles Walker of Hartford City, Ind., and Estel Schultz of South Carolina, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service to honor the life of Betty Schultz will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Pleasant Grove Chapel of Julian Peeples Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Reilly officiating.
Burial will be in United Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m.
