George Mitchell Clark

Mr. George Mitchell Clark, 83, of Dawnville community in Dalton, departed this life Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, at his home.

George was born Jan. 12, 1930, in Dalton. He was preceded in death by his father, Howard Mitchell Clark; his mother and stepfather, Minnie Staten and Emerson Barrett; a brother, C.M. Clark; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lee and Nora Akins.

George worked for more than 30 years at Cook and Ingle Equipment Co. and in his later years drove a school bus for Whitfield County Schools. He was a member of Harmony Baptist Church for more than 50 years and was a deacon at Maddox Chapel Baptist Church and Harmony Baptist Church for more than 60 years. George loved to spend many hours a week in his garden growing fruits and vegetables to be canned and frozen by his wife. He was always sharing his extra vegetables with relatives, neighbors and his many friends from church. If George was not working in his garden, you could find him doing some type of yard work or completing his daily cleaning chores with his loving wife Altha. George had to always be active doing something, fixing something or tinkering with about anything. You would not find him sitting idle. George was also very passionate in his support of his church, Harmony Baptist. He took great pride and pleasure in his support of all church activities and events. If Harmony’s doors were open, you could always count on George being in attendance. George’s family, friends, and neighbors will miss him dearly.

He is survived by his wife, Altha Akins Clark of the home, and they would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on Dec. 1, 2013; son, Mitchell Clark of Kansas City, Kan.; daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Roger Hicks of Rocky Face; grandchildren, Trent Clark, Tanner Clark, Dillon Clark and Derek Hicks; sister, Lillie Mae Childers of Dalton; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Emogene and Ed Busie of Dalton; and several nieces and nephews.

Services to celebrate the life of George Mitchell Clark will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Harmony Baptist Church with his pastor, the Rev. Billy Willis Sr. and former pastor Dr. Randy Smith officiating.

He will be laid to rest at Whitfield Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at Ponders Melrose Chapel today from 5 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
