Financial 'rescue' to bring ramifications

Phone calls were placed. Arms were twisted and enough sweetheart deals were cut to get the U.S. House of Representatives to retreat from its earlier stand and go along with the Senate on a $700 billion bailout of big American investment banks.

The free market and the concept of corporate responsibility was sacrificed this week under an avalanche of hysterical propaganda and dubious economic reasoning.

The rout was complete.

President Bush — the faux conservative — led the way, as much as this president is able to lead anything these days. Both major presidential candidates — Obama and McCain — voiced their support and all the major leadership of both parties lined up neatly.

Big Government bellied up to the trough and drank deeply.

The long-term ramifications of this ideological collapse will reverberate for years to come, but you don’t have to wait long for one unavoidable byproduct.

The American public, already doubtful of its federal government’s competence and honesty, has irrefutable evidence of the absence of either.

Throw the rascals out?

It’s easy to say, but from where we look there are nothing but more rascals looking to take their place.

“These are,” as Thomas Paine once said, “the times which try mean men’s souls.”
