Today I saw something in a local paper from Dalton that made me very sad and that is a perfect example of why there needs to be some form of marriage equality in the South.
Sadly, a loving couple was separated by death over the weekend. After all other members of the deceased person’s family were listed, the individual’s partner was listed at the very end as a “special friend.” While I am sure this was thought of as a kind gesture by the family, it is a very, very inadequate way to describe a loving couple’s relationship. Gay couples’ relationships are just as loving, supportive and meaningful as straight couples’ relationships, believe it or not.
Please stop belittling legitimate relationships as a threat to traditional marriage, if anything your fear of our relationships is more of a threat than anything. Get over it and give loving couples their due. Legalize and legitimize our relationships so that we are more than just “special friends” because I assure you we are much more than that.
