Citizen of the Week: Ron Marcus

The Daily Citizen

— Ron Marcus is known for welcoming newbies into the Dalton Area Cyclists group and helping to make everyone feel comfortable, friends say.

He recently went beyond his usual kindnesses.

When Marcus learned of a racer outside the group who left behind a wife and children when the man died after colliding with a car while competing in the 3 State 3 Mountain Challenge bike race that came through Chattanooga recently, Marcus decided to take action.

Antonio Jose Desousa Ribeiro, 49, of Jacksonville, Fla., wasn’t someone Marcus personally knew. Alisa Brogdon is also a member of the Dalton Area Cyclists, a group of bicyclists who meet frequently for group rides. Brogdon said the group has always worked hard to help its members, but Marcus spearheaded an effort to help a family to which he had no connection.

“He went above and beyond finding the man’s name and then going to find out what the need was from the family,” she said.

Brogdon said Marcus learned where the man worked and talked to a coworker about how he could help. When he learned Ribeiro left behind a family, Marcus went to the Dalton cyclists and took up collections, gathered about $500, and sent it to the family, she said.

Compassion is often easily engendered toward people we know or who live in our communities. To look beyond what’s right in front of us can take some extra effort.

For organizing the effort to help a family in need, The Daily Citizen names Ron Marcus Citizen of the Week.
