Citizen of the Week: Hilda Nelson

The Daily Citizen

— Hilda Nelson is known as a person who always steps up to the task whenever there’s a need — and often even before she’s asked.

The volunteer and board director for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Georgia has helped with the organization since 1996, said Executive Director Staci Halyak. The organization pairs adults with children of the same sex in a mentor program designed to assist children who need it.

Nelson is both a “buddy” in the organization’s school-based program and a board member for the local unit.

Board President J.T. Finley said Nelson has done it all, from keeping minutes at board meetings to being treasurer.

This year, Halyak said, when Nelson learned the organization’s funding had been cut, she took it upon herself to find funding sources so the mentors and children in the program could still have a nice Christmas party.

“We normally eat pizza, they visit with Santa,” Halyak explained.

She said Nelson, with help from her daughter, Tasha, helped get the food donated and got together craft items for the younger kids.

“It doesn’t matter what comes up with our organization, if she’s asked to do something, she always does it, and if something comes up, she’s always the first to volunteer,” Halyak said. “We purchased our building last year, and during that she was over here just volunteering her time to paint and clean or whatever needed to be done. She also brought her husband to help.”

Finley said Nelson is involved in “pretty much every activity or function we have.”

“She’s awesome,” he said.

We agree. For her work with Big Brothers Big Sisters, The Daily Citizen names Hilda Nelson Citizen of the Week.
