Come late fall, the year of service Kathy Muller committed to will be complete.
“Kathy moved here recently from Maine, and she really wanted to get involved in helping people in the local community, and that’s why she joined the AmeriCorps VISTA program through United Way of Northwest Georgia,” said United Way spokeswoman Andrea Mansfield.
Muller recently headed up a service project in which 26 volunteers from throughout the community, including a Boy Scout troop, pitched in to help refurbish the grounds at the Whitfield County-Dalton Day Care Center.
The center is a United Way agency that receives funding and support annually. Mansfield said that as part of the VISTA program, 13 individuals are given a small stipend through a government grant in exchange for spending about a year in volunteer service. The stipend covers basic costs of living.
Muller is assigned full time to work at the day care, Mansfield said, and she, like the other AmeriCorps VISTA workers, coordinates several larger-scale projects throughout the year.
Thanks to this one, the day care center now has a vegetable bed and spruced up grounds.
For her generous spirit and work in getting others to serve, The Daily Citizen names Kathy Muller Citizen of the Week.
