Roadrunner basketball is back tonight

The Daily Citizen

— The Roadrunners are returning home.

The Dalton State College Roadrunners basketball team, that is.

After starting the season with an undefeated record — with all three wins on the road — the Roadrunners play their first home game tonight at the trade center against Hiwassee College of Madisonville, Tenn. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.

So far, the Roadrunners have lived up to their name. The team has traveled to Mobile, Ala., Clinton, Miss. and Central, S.C. Everywhere they’ve gone, they’ve won.

Now they’ll make the short trip up Dug Gap Mountain to their home nest — the trade center.

There’s an air of excitement about the return of Roadrunners basketball. From 1968-1978, the team thrilled area residents on campus at the Bandy Gymnasium before going extinct for 35 years. The Roadrunners enjoyed plenty of success during that era. The community was a huge part of that success, helping cheer the team on to plenty of wins.

And now basketball is back, with an exciting roster of talented players who are led by Tony Ingle, the outgoing, hometown head coach.

The trade center has a seating capacity of 1,950. DSC athletic department officials said they have sold more than 700 season tickets. Tonight’s game could be a sellout. We hope the arena is packed full of fans — boisterous fans — to welcome the relaunched basketball team. The community needs to establish a definite home-court advantage for its new team.

In addition to basketball, DSC athletes will be honored during a special halftime ceremony. The DSC cheerleaders will be in attendance, as well as the Roadrunners mascot, “Rage.” If you can’t make tonight’s game, you can listen to a live broadcast on Mix 104.5 FM.

When the final buzzer sounds tonight, we hope the Roadrunners are still perfect.

And we hope you are there to witness history.
