Citizen of the Week: Ryan Hollingsworth

The Daily Citizen

— Each year, Dalton hosts dozens of athletic tournaments. But the “Roadrunner Rumble” flag football tournament stood out in a number of ways.

First, it brought teams from as far away as North Carolina. Second, it was a fundraiser for Dalton State College’s growing intercollegiate sports program. And last, and most important, it was the brainchild of and largely organized by a student at Dalton State College, Ryan Hollingsworth. The tournament raised more than $500 that will go toward athletic scholarships.

Those who know Hollingsworth say they aren’t surprised he took the lead on such a major project. Hollingsworth has been a part-time student worker for the campus recreation department for a couple of years, and he’d had a big impact on campus even before the Roadrunner Rumble.

“He runs our intramural program,” said Garrett Burgner, director of campus recreation. “He has organized tournaments and leagues for our students and the community. ... He also organized a basketball league this past winter for our students and many former students. He schedules all intramural sports, organizes the officials and participates.”

Hollingsworth, a business student, will graduate in May. He has already accepted a full-time job with the Whitfield County Parks and Recreation Department.

For his efforts to improve the quality of life of his fellow students at Dalton State College, The Daily Citizen names Ryan Hollingsworth Citizen of the Week.
