Letter: Extremely concerned

— I recently read some online reviews by people who either live in our community, or have previously done so; these reviews were in response to an individual seeking a move to our location. I came away extremely concerned after reading racially and religiously charged comments from these Daltonians and/or Whitfieldians.

As a local educator, I am well aware of the issues we as a community face, but I am also optimistic that we are taking strides to rectify some of these problem areas, and will continue to do so. I know I am not the first, nor will I be the last, to send forth a passionate call for all of us to unite in a way befitting of human beings.

While history offers up plenty of negative outcomes concerning these types of divisions, one can find a plethora of instances where people of varying backgrounds, beliefs and cultures have come together in seemingly miraculous ways. When I look into the eyes of my pupils, of all walks of life, I do not see a deep-rooted tree of discrimination and/or hatred; what I find is hope, and a desire to live life to the fullest, amongst all those who reside alongside him/her.

Therefore, I simply want to remind each of us adults that we should be particularly careful in the way we go about raising our posterity, for it is they who will inherit what we leave behind. May we instill virtues that cross various lines of separation, and may we provide examples of love in its truest sense, that is, love and compassion for one another.
