“If you like your health care plan, you will be able to keep your health care plan. Period. No one will take it away. No matter what.”— President Barack Obama
There’s a word for saying something that you know is not true: lying.
And that’s exactly what President Barack Obama and other Democrats have been doing for the past three years.
NBC News reported Monday that the Obama administration has known since 2010 that between 50 and 75 percent of the 14 million Americans who buy their insurance on the individual market would lose it as a result of the Affordable Care Act. Their policies no longer meet the minimum standards set by the law. CBS News reports than 2 million Americans have already had their policies canceled and the number grows daily.
And many whose policies aren’t banned by Obamacare are getting a big sticker shock, finding their rates have soared. Insurance companies say the law’s requirement that they sell insurance to anyone, regardless of a person’s health, means their costs will go up so they have to raise rates to cover those costs.
And yet Democrats assured Americans, repeatedly, that the law would not cause anyone to lose their insurance.
“To say that President Obama is on the record telling Americans they can keep their current health insurance is an understatement,” writes National Review Editor Rich Lowry. “He repeated the assurance so many times during the health care debate that it was almost a verbal tic.”
On Tuesday, U.S. House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer admitted that Democrats knew that many Americans would lose their insurance. But he insisted they had not lied.
“I think the message was accurate. It was not precise enough … (it) should have been caveated with ‘assuming you have a policy that in fact does do what the bill is designed to do,’” he said.
Forced to admit what is now obvious, that many Americans will lose their health insurance, Obamacare defenders now promise those Americans will find insurance that is at least as good on the new health care exchanges.
That may or may not be true. Only time will tell. But it’s a very different promise from the one they have made repeatedly during the past three years.
