River enthusiasts plan fish fry

Catfish and lots of water talk will be on the menu for the 8th Annual CRBI-Northwest Georgia Credit Union Fish Fry & Green Expo set for Saturday Nov. 7 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Rome First United Methodist Church.

The event will feature $8 plates of fried catfish, hushpuppies, cheese grits and cole slaw as well as a Green Expo with exhibits highlighting fuel efficient vehicles, water and energy saving devices for the home and other environmentally friendly products.

The Fry’s sponsor, the Coosa River Basin Initiative based in Rome, will also disseminate information about Georgia’s looming “water crisis.”

“This event is more than just good food and a fun time for our community,” said Joe Cook, CRBI Executive Director & Riverkeeper. “It’s an opportunity to learn about what we should be doing as a community, state and region to meet our future water and energy needs. If you come you’ll leave with a full belly and head full of ideas about how we can all save water, energy and money.”

Tickets ($8 or $4 small fry tickets) may be purchased at the CRBI office, online at www.coosa.org or at Northwest Georgia Credit Union, Kroger, Lavender Mountain Hardware and Cedar Creek Park. Homemade desserts will also be available.

The Green Expo will feature numerous exhibits including fuel efficient vehicles from the Riverside Auto Group in Rome and Smart Car in Buckhead, bicycles from Cycle Therapy and vehicles powered by recycled cooking oil from Ecological Creations and Filta Fry.

Last year, CRBI volunteer served more than 900 plates, and this year is looking to top 1000 plate mark. Prizes, including $25 Visa gift cards from Northwest Georgia Credit Union, will be awarded to random patrons throughout the 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. dining time.

CRBI will also raffle off a Wilderness Systems Tarpon 120 kayak donated by Cedar Creek Park in Cave Spring. Raffle tickets ($5) may be purchased online at HYPERLINK "http://www.coosa.org" www.coosa.org or at the Fish Fry.

For the third year, Northwest Georgia Credit Union is serving as the lead sponsor. Other supporters include Georgia Power Co., SCANA Energy, Dixie Homecrafters, Allied Foods, Culbreth, Carr & Watson Animal Clinic, Cedar Creek Park, WLAQ and The Ridge 95.7.

Proceeds from the event will fund CRBI’s efforts to protect the Coosa River and its tributaries in Northwest Georgia and Northeast Alabama.

CRBI is a 501c3 non-profit organization with the mission of informing and empowering citizens to preserve, protect and restore North America’s most biologically diverse river basin.
