Suspected gas-throwing pharmacy thief arrested

Submitted by the Dalton Police Department

— Deputies from the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office arrested Michael Roberts on warrants from the Dalton Police Department this afternoon.

Roberts was wanted on charges related to a May 29 aggravated assault and armed robbery at the Dalton Drug pharmacy.

Roberts had been on the run since the incident. Late this morning, a property owner called 911 to alert authorities that he thought Roberts was hiding in the woods on his property. Whitfield County deputies responded and arrested Roberts in the woods near the Red Barn Flea Market at 2753 Old Grade Road after a short chase.

Officers from the Dalton Police Department, Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol were close to arresting Roberts on Wednesday. Acting on a tip about Roberts’ whereabouts, officers found Roberts hiding on the roof of Avis Apparel on Old Grade Road, but he jumped off and managed to escape. He apparently suffered a leg injury when he jumped from the roof.

The original incident happened when Roberts entered Dalton Drug shortly after 2:30 p.m. on May 29. He demanded pain pills and after he was refused by an employee, he threw gasoline on her from a small bottle and walked behind a counter and stole bottles of Percocet and fled from the store. After determining his identity from surveillance images, investigators publicized Roberts’ picture and have been working through tips from the public to locate him.

Roberts is charged with armed robbery and aggravated assault.
