Man arrested for attempted rape

Dalton police arrested a man this morning on charges related to breaking into a woman’s house in March and trying to rape her.

Dalton Police Department spokesman Bruce Frazier said Wayne J. Norwood, 41, of 2941 Waring Road, is accused of aggravated sexual battery, criminal attempt to rape, false imprisonment and burglary. Officials said Norwood went to an apartment on Vann Circle between 10:30 and 11 a.m. on March 7, knocked on the victim’s door, and asked if one of his friends was there.

“When the victim said ‘no’ and tried to close the door, he held the door and forced her back inside the apartment,” according to a police press release. “He forced her into the bedroom and took her clothes off. When the victim screamed, the suspect told her to be quiet or he would hurt her. The suspect attempted to rape the victim, but was unable. He masturbated instead and then fled.”

Frazier said Norwood did not know the woman.

Police located Norwood after a neighbor told investigators that a white Jeep Cherokee that didn’t belong in the neighborhood was parked in front of the apartment the morning of March 7. Police found Norwood on June 21 after getting a tip that a white male driving a Jeep Cherokee at an apartment complex on James Street was soliciting women to get into his vehicle.

“One of the women reported that the driver attempted to expose his penis as he was talking to her,” according to the release. She took down the Jeep’s license plate number and gave it to police, and an officer spotted the vehicle and pulled it over. Norwood was driving and had an open container of beer hidden under his shirt, officials said.

The officer noticed the vehicle and description matched the suspect in the March rape attempt, and police took Norwood into custody and interviewed him.

“After obtaining a search warrant for Norwood’s DNA, investigators sent a sample of his DNA to the GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) Crime Lab where it was determined to be a match for DNA evidence that was recovered from the crime scene of the March rape attempt,” the release stated. “Investigators arrested Norwood without incident on Thursday morning.”

He remains in the Whitfield County jail without bond.
