Phone tips lead to arrest of accused rapist

A man wanted for rape and several other sexual crimes was in jail Wednesday after the Dalton Police Department received multiple phone tips regarding his location, officials said.

Lawrence Edward “Larry” Womac was taken into custody without incident early Wednesday afternoon at a home off of Westside Circle near Rocky Face, the police department’s spokesman said, adding, “Thanks to everyone who called in with tips about his location.” An agent from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation assisted in taking Womac into custody. He is expected to have a bond hearing today.

The police department had asked for information from the public on the location of the 57-year-old Womac, who was wanted on warrants for rape, aggravated assault, aggravated sodomy, false imprisonment, first degree cruelty to children, sexual battery against a child under 16 and aggravated child molestation.

According to police, shortly after midnight on Friday, Womac invited two juvenile girls into his room at the Guest Inn hotel at 2220 Chattanooga Road. The girls were guests at the hotel staying in a different room. While in his room, Womac allegedly raped one of the girls and sexually assaulted the other. Both fled the room, police said.
