Chynoweth convicted of riot, obstruction

John Steven Chynoweth, 23, of 418 Rebecca St., Jasper, was convicted today by a Whitfield County jury for the crimes of riot in a penal institution and obstruction of a law enforcement officer. The charges arose from a March 15, 2012, incident which occurred at the Whitfield County Jail in which Chynoweth attacked Detention Officer Alex Pimentel and attempted to strike him in the face. Judge William T. Boyett, who presided over the trial, set sentencing for Oct. 1.

Chynoweth was in custody at the time on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and aggravated battery for which he had been arrested on March 8, 2012. Those charges and other charges which have been made while Chynoweth has been an inmate are still pending.

Boyett could sentence Chynoweth to as much as 20 years for the riot charge and five years for obstruction. The case was presented to the jury by Assistant District Attorney Jason Souther, assisted by Assistant District Attorney Keely Norman. Chynoweth was represented by Circuit Public Defender Mike McCarthy.
