Man charged with possibly spreading HIV scheduled for court

A man charged with reckless conduct by an HIV-infected person for allegedly having unprotected sex without telling the alleged victim about his condition is scheduled to be in court today.

Onofre Rodriguez Jr., 29, of Dalton, is scheduled for calendar call in Whitfield County Superior Court before Judge William T. Boyett where he’ll have the opportunity to state whether he is ready for trial to start on Monday.

Dalton police arrested Rodriguez in April after the alleged victim spoke to investigators. Rodriguez is a registered sex offender who was convicted in 2001 of statutory rape. Rodriguez remains in the Whitfield County jail without bond.

• Stevie Lee Walkey, 45, of Dalton, who is charged with attempted murder, is scheduled to appear before Judge David Blevins on Sept. 27 as part of a plea calendar, court records show. Authorities say Walkey fired a handgun at his wife and stepson in February. His attorney, Sam Sanders, has said there is more to the story.

• Next month, Raymundo Hurtado-Lazarin, 31, of Dalton, who is charged with rape, is scheduled to appear before Blevins. His court date is set for Oct. 30 to state whether he is ready for trial. Officials say Hurtado-Lazarin raped a woman after she refused several times to go out on a date with him.
