Man charged with attacking woman, shoving police officer

A Dalton man is in jail after police say he pushed his way into his girlfriend’s apartment, pulled out clumps of her hair and strangled her, then shoved a police officer who tried to arrest him.

Miguel Angel Meraz, 21, of 911 Vernon Ave.-12, was charged Tuesday by the Dalton Police Department with aggravated assault, simple battery, battery, theft by taking, sale of or intent to sell marijuana, unlawful for an inmate to possess a controlled substance, cruelty to a child, false imprisonment, willful obstruction of law officers, obstruction of an officer by threat or violence and possession and use of drug-related objects. He remained in the Whitfield County jail without bond as of Wednesday evening.

According to a police incident report, the woman told police she had been trying to break up with Meraz for a week when he knocked on her bedroom window. The woman told him to go away, but when she went outside he was standing there and rushed in through the open door, locking them both inside, she told officers.

She said Meraz refused for about 45 minutes to let her go and that he hit her, strangled her to the point she couldn’t breathe for a short time and pulled her hair, all in front of her 2-year-old child. She said she finally convinced Meraz to let her change clothes in another room and was able to escape through a window and notify police.

According to another police report, an officer later that day located an individual matching Meraz’s description and contacted the officer who responded to the woman’s apartment so they could question him together.

The report states Meraz eventually admitted to being at the woman’s apartment but said she attacked him and that he had never refused to let her leave the apartment. When an officer tried to arrest him, he shoved nearby Officer Michael Houck to the ground and ran away, the report states. Another officer took him into custody after threatening to shoot him with a Taser if he didn’t stop.
