Prep roundup: Big blast by Mason leads Lions to win

Christian Heritage School didn’t let Tre Mason’s grand slam go to waste.

Mason’s fourth-inning four-RBI home run gave the Lions the lead for good in a 13-6 varsity baseball victory against visiting North Cobb Christian on Tuesday.

With the Lions (10-7, 7-4 Sub-region 6A-A) trailing 3-2, Mason went deep and his team never looked back.

Mason also had another hit and another RBI in the victory, while Spencer Robbins went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Chase Tidwell was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs and Jake Stokes added a two-run single.

Brady Souther pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing three runs off three hits and four walks. Robbins earned the win in relief, throwing 4 1/3 innings and allowing three runs. He gave up three walks and six hits while striking out five.

Adairsville 5, North Murray 1: The Mountaineers gave up four runs with two outs in the bottom of the first and couldn’t find their offensive rhythm while falling on the road in a Region 5-3A contest.

Brandon Brock was 2-for-4 with a double, and Aaron Granger drove in North Murray’s only run in the third to cut Adairsville’s lead to 4-1.

Granger took the loss on the mound, going four innings and allowing five hits and two walks while striking out seven for the Mountaineers (7-9, 4-3).

Sonoraville 7, Coahulla Creek 5: The Colts (6-11, 3-5 Region 5-3A) lost their second straight game after the Phoenix scored two runs in the eighth.

Tucker Sheram was 3-for-4, while Zack Glines, Braiden Jacobs and Blake Phillips each went 2-for-4. Phillips had a double and an RBI, while Glines had a double. Scout Plott had an RBI double.

Jacobs pitched seven innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits and two walks while striking out four. Phillips pitched an inning and allowed two runs (one earned) off a hit and a walk while striking out one.

Calhoun 11, Murray County 0: Noah Price had the lone hit for the Indians (0-12, 0-10 Region 7-2A) in the road loss.

• Southeast Whitfield did not report results from Tuesday’s scheduled home game against Heritage-Catoosa by The Daily Citizen’s deadline.

    Needing a win to keep Southeast Whitfield High School’s baseball season meaningful, Raiders coach Brad Lofton turned to a pair of senior pitchers on Friday at Heritage-Catoosa.
    The seniors didn’t disappoint, but it was the offense and the defense that couldn’t come through.

  • Prep Roundup: Dalton golf teams in form at Fields Ferry

    Even in wet and muddy conditions, both the Dalton High School boys and girls golf teams are sharpening their games at the right time.
    With the Region 7-4A tournament scheduled in two weeks, both the Catamounts and the Lady Cats finished second during play at the Fields Ferry Invitational in Calhoun on Monday. Despite the soggy conditions, Dalton’s Jacob Brown tied for medalist honors with a 2-over par 74 to lead the Cats to a 313 combined score in the six-play, four-score format. Dalton finished three strokes behind tournament winner LaFayette.

    Dalton High School golfer Allen Behr shot a 3-under-par 69 during the second day of the Indian Invitational in Vidalia to lead the Catamounts to a top-10 finish in the event Saturday.

    The Lions took advantage of three crucial Mount Pisgah Christian errors, and the visiting Patriots couldn’t get the timely hit when they needed it as the Lions took a much-needed 5-3 win Monday night.

    As long as Southeast Whitfield High School’s baseball team continues to hit the ball and score runs the way it has so far this season, it really won’t matter what the defense does.

    Region 7-2A followed suit Wednesday, but Region 5-3A is still up in the air for playing games today.

    The Region 6-A, 7-2A and Region 7-4A high school basketball tournament games have been called off today due to the threat of bad weather and dangerous travel conditions. Games scheduled for today in regions 7-2A and 7-4A will be played Tuesday, weather permitting.
    Region 6-A takes a whole different look.
