Friday night football roundup: Lions win for seniors; Dade shuts out Indians

Senior night turned into a great night for the Christian Heritage Lions, but it was a cold and bitter defeat for the Providence Christian Storm.

Behind four total touchdowns from senior quarterback Trevor Brown, Christian Heritage (6-2) raced to a 40-0 lead at halftime and never looked back in the 47-0 win over Providence Christian (1-5) in Dalton Friday night.

“We went out and executed,” Christian Heritage coach Preston Poag said.

Christian Heritage started the game by kicking off to Providence Christian, but within eight plays, Brown had thrown a touchdown pass to wide receiver Nich Bartley and put the first points on the board.

Running back Austin Lowe scored the second touchdown of the game, giving the Lions a 14-0 lead.

Brown finished the night with two touchdowns rushing and two touchdowns passing and 154 yards through the air.

Running back Tyson Cooper paced the Lions’ ground attack with 114 yards on five carries.

Dade County 47, Murray County 0: The Wolverines led 21-0 at the end of the first quarter and the defense kept the Murray County offense bottled up all night to take a Region 7-2A victory in Trenton.

Dade County (5-3, 3-2) picked up a victory to remain in the thick of the race for one of the four state playoff spots from the region. The Wolverines added scores in each quarter.

Murray County (1-7, 0-5) was led by cornerback Jagger Childers, who had an interception, and linebacker Kevin Chavez, who led the team in tackles.

Indians coach Chad Brewer was impressed with the Dade County linebacking corps.

“They played very hard and stacked the box on the run and made us throw the ball,” Brewer said. “Then when we threw it, they did a good job of containing us with their second line.

“They really had some solid linebackers who did a good job of getting us to the ground and not allowing us to break things.”

Brewer also liked his team’s determination on a cold night against a rugged team in a rough loss.

“We are still fighting, and one of the things that will really help us down the road is that we are getting a lot of young kids in the game,” said Brewer, who took over the program this past spring. “We are obviously not getting the results that we are wanting right now, but we have to keep working. That is about all that we can do. There is no magic bullet. It is just about getting back to work and getting on the practice field and getting better.”

The problems that have been plaguing Christian Heritage School’s baseball team finally plagued the other team.

  • Prep roundup: SE offense keeps foot on throttle

As long as Southeast Whitfield High School’s baseball team continues to hit the ball and score runs the way it has so far this season, it really won’t matter what the defense does.
Coach Brad Lofton still likes how the Raiders’ fielding is improving.
