What's Going On: Region play points the way to state

As we move into the second half of April, the focus for many of the local high schools’ spring athletics shifts to the postseason.

Whether it is golf, tennis or track and field, there are tons of region events scheduled for this week which marks the beginning of the march to state.

Today, Coahulla Creek and North Murray begin the Region 5-3A golf tournament at 8 a.m. on Chats-worth’s Indian Trace Golf Course. The girls start at the same time and location Tuesday.

Those same two schools also begin the Region 5-3A tennis tournaments today.

Happening in Cartersville’s Dellinger Park, the North Murray boys have the No. 2 seed and face Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe first at 11 a.m., while third-seeded Coahulla Creek takes on Ringgold at 2 p.m. If each wins, they will face in the semifinals Tuesday at 11 a.m. The top four teams earn state tournament berths.

In the girls bracket, Coahulla Creek holds the No. 5 seed and faces LFO at 12:30 p.m. while sixth-seeded North Murray faces Sonoraville at 2 p.m.

The Region 5-3A track and field meet at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Gordon Central and conclude Wednesday. Coahulla Creek’s boys team is undefeated, while North Murray boasts Brady Swilling, a Class 2A state medalist last spring in the high jump.

Tuesday is a big day for Murray County’s teams in the Region 7-2A tournaments and meets. The Indians and Lady Indians track and field squads will compete at the Region 7-2A meets in Pepperell. Meanwhile, the Murray County boys tennis team starts its region tournament with the No. 7 seed and a matchup with Armuchee at 11:30 a.m. The Lady Indians hold the No. 4 seed and host Model at 9 a.m. in the first round.

Dalton, Northwest Whitfield and Southeast Whitfield all begin their Region 7-4A tennis tournaments on Wednesday at Lakeshore Park and concludes Thursday.

The Southeast boys, the sub-region’s No. 4 seed, faces Gilmer at 10:30 a.m. in a play-in match. Dalton’s boys, the top seed, face Sub-region 7B-4A’s fifth-seeded Bruins at 3 p.m. In the girls bracket, third-seeded Northwest faces Cass at noon while top-seeded Dalton faces Southeast at 3 p.m.

The Region 7-4A track and field meets will begin Wednesday, continue Thursday and conclude Friday at Dalton High.

• Five local golf teams will compete in the Nob North Invitational, scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. at Nob North Golf Course in Cohutta.

Christian Heritage, Coahulla Creek, Dalton, Northwest and Southeast each will compete in the event.

• This is one final reminder for any former high school football players from Murray County, North Murray or Southeast interested in a reunion of sorts on the gridiron. They are invited to join forces and compete as one in an alumni football game against Ringgold. The game will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Mountaineer Stadium in Chatsworth.

The cost to play is $50, which covers equipment and uniforms. Those interested in participating should contact coach Chad Murray at chad.murray@murray.k12.ga.us or (706) 260-7471.

  • DHS at SE soccer 7 mlh.jpg Prep Roundup: Unbeaten streak rolls on for Cats

Replicating the start of last year’s Class 4A state title match, Dalton High School’s boys soccer team needed just four minutes to score its first goal at Southeast Whitfield on Friday.
The Catamounts scored five more — and again defended their crown of dominance in the sport.

  • Prep Baseball Roundup: Raiders out of hunt for the playoffs

Needing a win to keep Southeast Whitfield High School’s baseball season meaningful, Raiders coach Brad Lofton turned to a pair of senior pitchers on Friday at Heritage-Catoosa.
The seniors didn’t disappoint, but it was the offense and the defense that couldn’t come through.

TUNNEL HILL — Similar to Wednesday’s Sub-region 7B-4A baseball series opener at Dalton High School, Northwest Whitfield fell behind early Thursday versus the Catamounts.

  • Prep Roundup: Dalton golf teams in form at Fields Ferry

Even in wet and muddy conditions, both the Dalton High School boys and girls golf teams are sharpening their games at the right time.
With the Region 7-4A tournament scheduled in two weeks, both the Catamounts and the Lady Cats finished second during play at the Fields Ferry Invitational in Calhoun on Monday. Despite the soggy conditions, Dalton’s Jacob Brown tied for medalist honors with a 2-over par 74 to lead the Cats to a 313 combined score in the six-play, four-score format. • Wrestler of the year 2014 2 mlh.jpg All-Area Wrestling Team and Wrestler of the Year: Winning another title was the only goal for Wheeler

When Dalton High School wrestler Sidney Wheeler won a state title for the first time two years ago as a sophomore, he admitted he became a little complacent about what it would take to replicate the feat — perhaps not noticeably so to most observers, but enough to take success for granted. Wheeler believed it a matter of course that he would win state again, and he thought the second title would simply be the middle child in a high school three-peat.

North Murray High School’s baseball team may not be among the group tied for first place in Region 5-3A, but the Mountain-eers are sitting fairly comfortably in fourth place.
If the regular season ended today, that would still put North Murray in the state playoffs for the first time.

As participants in an indoor sport, high school wrestlers don’t often have to consider the weather’s effects on their competitions.
This year’s Georgia High School Association traditional state tournaments are an exception.
