Dalton’s Ethan Young will compete for the next three days, starting today, at USA Swimming’s Speedo Junior National Championships in Irvine, Calif.
Young, 15, who is about to begin his sophomore year at Dal-ton High School, will compete against other 18-and-under swimmers from across the country in the 200-meter backstroke today, plus the 100 butterfly on Wednes-day and the 100 backstroke on Thursday. He will represent his year-round USA Swimming program, the Carpet Capital Aquatics Club (CCAC) Makos, in the meet at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center.
At last summer’s junior nationals in Indianapolis, Young finished 22nd in the 200 backstroke. He also competed in the 100 backstroke, but did not make the finals. While representing the CCAC at a meet at Georgia Tech in Atlanta in December, Young set USA Swimming’s national age-group record for 14-and-under boys in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1 minute, 46.56 seconds.
Young could become the second CCAC swimmer to win a national title in as many years. Taylor Dale — a 2013 Dalton High School graduate who will begin his college swimming career at Georgia this school year — won the 100 backstroke championship with a time of 55.98 seconds while representing the CCAC at last year’s junior nationals.
