Prep roundup: Southeast volleyball wins three at Lumpkin

Southeast Whitfield High School’s volleyball team picked up three wins at the Lumpkin County Invitational Saturday, improving the Lady Raiders’ record to 4-3.

Southeast Whitfield beat Lumpkin County 25-14, 25-28, 15-9, Johnson-Gainesville 25-14, 21-25, 15-8, and Pickens 25-17, 25-7.

After starting the year with three losses in four matches, coach Bethany Kenemer saw a different attitude from her team Saturday.

“We’ve really worked hard on playing with intensity and playing as a team and really focused on after every play either saying to whoever messed up, ‘Hey, we’ve got your back,’ or celebrating after a point,” Kenemer said. “Instead of letting the bad things compound and get us down, we’ve really tried focusing on the positive stuff.”

Yasmeen Paloblanco finished with 24 digs and 11 aces throughout the three matches, while sophomore setter Angie Purkey had 61 assists.

Wendy Perez finished with a team-high 29 kills. Serena Ramsey added 17 kills, and Yolanda Melgarejo added 16 kills. Melisa Fraire added 10 aces and seven digs.

Northwest Whitfield High School’s baseball team has been successful this season. But at the same time, no one said success would be easy.
Several times this year, the Bruins have fallen behind early in the first few innings before answering with a rally to ensure the wins keep coming. On Friday, that formula delivered a Sub-region 7B-4A championship for the second year in a row.

“Intensity,” he said. “If you can’t get up for this series, then why are you playing?”

When Dalton High School wrestler Sidney Wheeler won a state title for the first time two years ago as a sophomore, he admitted he became a little complacent about what it would take to replicate the feat — perhaps not noticeably so to most observers, but enough to take success for granted. Wheeler believed it a matter of course that he would win state again, and he thought the second title would simply be the middle child in a high school three-peat.
