Southeast Whitfield’s wrestling team joined Murray County as the two local programs to begin their seasons Saturday, but the teams went to separate events.
Southeast competed in a six-team dual tournament at Dacula High School and finished third overall with a 3-2 record. The Raiders won 39-26 against Dacula, 43-26 versus Elbert County and 52-20 over East Paulding but lost 47-31 against Brookwood and 42-34 against area rival Heritage-Catoosa.
Noah Bartenfield won all five of his matches at the 113-pound weight class for Southeast and won two of the five matches by pinfall. Other Raiders with winning records were: Omar Ruiz (126, 5-0), Ismael Sandoval (138, 3-2); Tyler Brown (160, 4-1); Tanner Acosta (182, 3-2), Austin Allen (195, 5-0); and Garrett McClure (285, 4-1).
Southeast’s JV team also wrestled at Dacula and finished second out of six teams. Jovani Rosas (138) led the Raiders with three wins in three bouts.
n Murray County wrestled at Sequoyah against the hosts and Lithia Springs. Murray County won six of the eight matches against Sequoyah and six of 15 against Lithia Springs.
Blaine Thornbury won both his matches for the Indians in the 152-pound weight class. Austin McCall (126), Mason Cagle (138), Matthew Scott (195) and Diego Leon (220) each won their only matches for Murray County. Teams scored weren’t kept.
n Northwest Whitfield’s JV team competed against nine others at the Cherokee Scramble at Cherokee High in Canton.
Coty Carlock (126) and Noah Burns (160) each went 4-0 while Bryan Gembe (113), Kade Stephens (138), Tyler Holcomb (152), Garrett Bowen (195), Josh Dunagan (220) and Jordan Lewis (220) all finished 3-0 at the scramble.
