CHS tennis wins two

But weather sidelines most local teams

Christian Heritage School’s varsity tennis teams closed their regular season with a pair of victories against Gordon Lee on Thursday afternoon in Chickamauga.

Both teams finished the schedule 5-4 and fifth in Sub-region 6A-A. The Lions and Lady Lions will play at 4 p.m. Monday at Darlington, which finished fourth in both the boys and girls sub-region standings. The winner will earn a spot in the Region 6-A tournament, which begins Tuesday at Darlington.

Against Gordon Lee, the Lions picked up a 5-0 win behind singles victories from No. 1 Phillip McClure, 6-4, 6-1, No. 2 Evan Townsend, 6-1, 6-1, and No. 3 Devin Sanders, 6-0, 6-2, plus doubles wins from No. 1 Samuel Pippin and Brian Pierce, 6-0, 6-2, and No. 2 Austin Lowe and Harrison Kranzlein, who accepted a forfeit.

The Lady Lions beat Gordon Lee 3-0, with the top two singles matches not completed because of inclement weather that struck in the third set. Sarah Pippin won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, while in doubles No. 1 Erin Grace White and Kacie Griggs won 4-6, 6-1, 6-0, and No. 2 Courtney Pirkle and Sydney White won 6-3, 6-4

• The threat of inclement weather postponed or canceled most local high school varsity sports events scheduled for Thursday.

In baseball, Model at Murray County was postponed.

In golf, Dalton’s girls were scheduled to face Southeast Whitfield at Indian Trace, but that nine-hole match was postponed and likely won’t be rescheduled. Murray County’s boys and girls matches with Gordon Lee at Battlefield Golf Club in Ringgold were rescheduled for 4 p.m. next Thursday.

Murray County’s girls and boys soccer teams were scheduled to host Morris Innovative, but those matches were rescheduled for 5 and 7 p.m. today.

In tennis, boys and girls matches pitting Southeast versus Northwest Whitfield and North Murray versus Heritage-Catoosa were canceled and won’t be made up with region tournaments beginning next week.

In track and field, the following competitions were canceled: host Coahulla Creek’s meet with Gordon Lee, Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe and Ringgold; North Murray’s meet at Gilmer; and Murray County’s meet at Northwest. Dalton’s meet at Gordon Central was postponed and may be rescheduled, but no makeup date has been set.

When local prep athletic events are canceled, postponed or rescheduled for any reason, coaches are urged to notify The Daily Citizen in advance of the originally scheduled time by calling (706) 272-7742, 272-7732 or 272-7734. Notifications may also be sent to sports@daltoncitizen.com.

  • Isabel Salinas 5 mlh.jpg All-Area Spring Female Team: Salinas hoping things keep getting better and better with age

Isabel Salinas’ freshman season for Southeast Whitfield High School’s track and field team wasn’t up to her standards, and she really isn’t sure why it ended up that way in 2013. It could have been her injuries. It could have been not being in proper shape.
One thing Salinas, nicknamed “Izzy” by friends and coaches, does know is that her sophomore year went a lot better.

As a freshman at Northwest Whitfield High School, Seth Pierce came out of nowhere and was as dominant a pitcher as the area had. Finishing his “rookie” season with the Bruins, the left-handed Pierce led the area with nine victories — he also had one save — and showed overpowering dominance with a 9-3 record and 89 strikeouts in 73 1/3 innings. He finished his first season on the hill in Tunnel Hill with a 1.71 ERA while allowing 61 hits and 23 walks. Those numbers were also recorded against competition in a higher classification as the Bruins were playing Class 4A ball when the state had just five classifications. His performance earned him honors as 2012 The Daily Citizen All-Area Baseball Player of the Year.

VARNELL — Just as in other matches this season, there were handshakes and hugs awaiting the members of Coahulla Creek High School’s boys tennis team as they walked off the court Monday.
Unfortunately for the Colts, this time they were of the comforting rather than the congratulating variety.
