"After Deadline" sports podcast - Dec. 4, 2013

The Daily Citizen sports writers Devin Golden and Chris Whitfield discuss the proposed region alignments for the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 school years, including Dalton being in a sub-divided Region 5-5A and possible frustrations associated to being in a sub-divided format for a fifth straight season. Northwest Whitfield and Southeast Whitfield are in Region 7-4A with six other local teams, and Coahulla Creek, Murray County and North Murray are in Region 6-3A. Christian Heritage and Morris Innovative are in Region 6-A.

The pair also discuss the Coahulla Creek head coach vacancy and the mid-season finale of The Walking Dead, including Herschel's death and upcoming plans for the show's return next spring.

  • Wrestler of the year 2014 2 mlh.jpg All-Area Wrestling Team and Wrestler of the Year: Winning another title was the only goal for Wheeler

When Dalton High School wrestler Sidney Wheeler won a state title for the first time two years ago as a sophomore, he admitted he became a little complacent about what it would take to replicate the feat — perhaps not noticeably so to most observers, but enough to take success for granted. Wheeler believed it a matter of course that he would win state again, and he thought the second title would simply be the middle child in a high school three-peat.

As long as Southeast Whitfield High School’s baseball team continues to hit the ball and score runs the way it has so far this season, it really won’t matter what the defense does.

  • NM at DHS baseball 1 mlh.jpg Prep Roundup: A little bit of momentum

  • DHS wrestlers leaving 3 mlh.jpg Prep Wrestling: Later than usual, but it’s time for state

As participants in an indoor sport, high school wrestlers don’t often have to consider the weather’s effects on their competitions.
This year’s Georgia High School Association traditional state tournaments are an exception.
