Woodlawn claims title

Murray County school hauls in archery trifecta

Woodlawn Elementary School in Chatsworth has made a habit of bringing home plenty of trophies when it comes to the competitive archery, and earlier this year they added to it with both a state and national title.

Now, they need some space for another big trophy.

Woodlawn swept its competitions this year and capped off the season with a win Sunday at the National Archery In the Schools Program (NASP) World Championships in St. Louis, Mo. Shooting on the home field of the St. Louis Rams at the Edward Jones Dome, the Wolverines were certainly the hunters at this year’s championships.

Woodlawn, which had become the first elementary school to ever shoot a 3,300 score when they won the National Championship, broke that mark in winning the world title, shooting a 3,320. Hayden Elementary of Indiana finished second behind the Wolverines with a total of 3,277.

“We had the clean sweep, and we did it with smile,” Woodlawn archery coach Brad Bates said. “We have had a great week and have been celebrating an almost unbelievable week. It has been incredible.”

Last year, Woodland was the state champions and finished third at nationals and fourth at the worlds. This is the first time the school has won all three in the same year.

Four shooters finished on the medal stand for their grade, led by 6th-grader Braxton Bates and 4th-grader Ella Lance, who both had runner-up finishes. Bates, the son of the coach, shot a 287 (out of 300 possible points), while Lance finished with a 279. Two other Wolverines — Alyssa Laviana and Luke Headrick — finished fourth.

In all, the Wolverines took 24 shooters to worlds with the top 12 scores counting toward the team score. Woodlawn’s top-12 shooters averaged more than 276 points per shooter to win the title by such a large margin.

When Dalton High School wrestler Sidney Wheeler won a state title for the first time two years ago as a sophomore, he admitted he became a little complacent about what it would take to replicate the feat — perhaps not noticeably so to most observers, but enough to take success for granted. Wheeler believed it a matter of course that he would win state again, and he thought the second title would simply be the middle child in a high school three-peat.

As long as Southeast Whitfield High School’s baseball team continues to hit the ball and score runs the way it has so far this season, it really won’t matter what the defense does.

As participants in an indoor sport, high school wrestlers don’t often have to consider the weather’s effects on their competitions.
