Murray WR a first-teamer

Murray County High School junior Spencer Baggett led the way among three Indians who received All-Region 7-2A football recognition.

The team of standouts, which was selected by the region’s coaches, was released Tuesday.

Baggett was one of five wide receivers selected for the all-region offense and the only Murray County player who received first-team recognition. He finished this season with 33 catches for 213 yards and a touchdown.

“Spencer grew up a lot this year,” said Chad Brewer, who led the Indians to a 1-9 record in his first season as coach. “He was being forced into a role that he might not have been ready for, but he has been a starter since he walked into the school as a freshman. I think that he got comfortable this year. He has worked very hard in the weight room and is still doing so to have a great senior year.”

Murray County sophomore wide receiver Petee Waldon was on the honorable mention list, as was Indians junior linebacker Kevin Chavez. Waldon averaged 8.8 yards per catch and had three touchdown receptions. Chavez was Murray’s leading tackler with 108 total stops.

While the Indians finished with a losing mark for the eighth consecutive season, they did end a frustrating streak when they won 14-12 at Gordon Central on Sept. 13. It was the program’s first on-field victory — they won two games by forfeit in 2011 — since Oct. 1, 2010.

“They are individual awards but they are team awards as well, and they are very well-deserved for all of those guys,” Brewer said. “It is exciting to have all three of those guys back next year.”

Calhoun, which won its 13th straight region title this season and advanced to the Class 2A quarterfinals in the state playoffs, led the region with 12 first-team selections — seven on offense and five on defense.

Despite the soggy conditions, Dalton’s Jacob Brown tied for medalist honors with a 2-over par 74 to lead the Cats to a 313 combined score in the six-play, four-score format. Dalton finished three strokes behind tournament winner LaFayette.

When Dalton High School wrestler Sidney Wheeler won a state title for the first time two years ago as a sophomore, he admitted he became a little complacent about what it would take to replicate the feat — perhaps not noticeably so to most observers, but enough to take success for granted. Wheeler believed it a matter of course that he would win state again, and he thought the second title would simply be the middle child in a high school three-peat.

As long as Southeast Whitfield High School’s baseball team continues to hit the ball and score runs the way it has so far this season, it really won’t matter what the defense does.
