You’re going to hear and read a lot this week about some gigantic, season-defining, high school baseball series between a couple rival schools from around this area.
I’m not really sure what that’s all about. So for the next 481 words, I’ll spare you any mention of it.
Instead, soccer dominates the space below.
There are tons of interesting high school matchups on slate for this week, some pitting local team against local team and another showcasing a rivalry from the old Region 7-4A.
It all starts today with North Murray traveling to Coahulla Creek. The girls start at 5 p.m. with the boys right after. Both boys teams have played well this season and are in position to earn state playoff berths, but the Mountaineers are 9-0 in Region 5-3A play and want to lock up a second straight region title.
On Wednesday, Southeast Whitfield travels to Tunnel Hill for a rematch with Northwest Whitfield. While it doesn’t have any Sub-region 7B-4A implications, it’s an intracounty rivalry and a revenge opportunity for both Southeast squads. The Lady Bruins won 2-1 on Southeast’s field earlier this year, and the Northwest boys won 2-0 right after.
On Friday, North Murray plays at Christian Heritage while Southeast plays at Harmon Field against Dalton. The Mountaineers and Lions begin at 5 p.m. with the girls game, while the Lady Raiders and Lady Catamounts start their rematch at 5:30 p.m. Both Dalton teams won the first meetings with Southeast, and the boys squad hasn’t lost a game yet this season. Last year on Harmon Field, Southeast won in penalty kicks en route to a region championship.
Could the Raiders spoil the Cats’ undefeated season?
Additionally on Friday, Northwest plays at Rome with the girls starting at 5:30 p.m. and the boys right after. The Lady Bruins are having a fantastic season, while the Northwest boys are playing just as well. Last season, the Bruins beat the Wolves in Tunnel Hill to clinch a spot in the Class 4A state playoffs.
• Any former high school football players from Murray County, North Murray or Southeast are invited to join forces and compete as one in an alumni football game against Ringgold. The game will be April 19 at 7 p.m. at Mountaineer Stadium in Chatsworth.
The cost to play is $50, which covers equipment and uniforms. Those interested in participating should contact coach Chad Murray at email@example.com or (706) 260-7471.
• Aside from that Sub-region 7B-4A baseball clash I won’t speak about, the two local teams in Region 5-3A each have multiple games this week as the second half of league play begins.
Coahulla Creek plays three times — at Sonoraville at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, at Cartersville at 5:55 p.m. Thursday and home against Gordon Central at 5:30 p.m. Friday. North Murray plays twice — hosting Ringgold at 5:30 p.m. Thursday and traveling to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
