Girls Prep Track and Field: Two claim medals at state meet

Two track and field competitors from local high schools earned medals at the Georgia High School Association girls state meets Thursday, and two more qualified for the chance to do the same Saturday.

North Murray’s Megan Pittman finished fifth in the Class 3A discus, while Coahulla Creek’s A.T. Smith finished eighth in the long jump for Class 3A, claiming the first state medal for the second-year Lady Colts.

Pittman’s best throw was 107 feet, 4 inches. Gordon Central’s Haley Reynolds (120-8) won the event, followed by Cedar Grove’s Damier Gordon (114-4), North Hall’s Harper Seymour (112-8) and Fannin County’s Karly Thompson (109-5).

Smith’s best jump was 16-10.75 and was three inches better than Buford’s Corey Staples. Only the top eight earn medals at the state meet.

The winning jump of 41-3.5 came from Josey’s LaPorsha Wells.

In Class 2A field competition, Murray County’s Shea Pendley finished 13th in the shot put with a throw of 31-8, while teammate Caitlyn Wilson finished 16th in the discus at 71-2.

In Class 4A preliminary action, Dalton’s Susan Meinders finished second in her heat and in the top four overall in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.28 seconds. She will attempt to win back-to-back state titles in the event Saturday after winning the Class 3A title last season.

Northwest Whitfield’s Shelby Wilson won her qualifying heat in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:18 and will be in one of the two middle lanes for Saturday’s finals run.

McKinley Hopkins, another Lady Bruin, finished ninth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.47. In the 300 hurdles, she was disqualified for a technical violation, Northwest coach Shelley Rickett said.

When Dalton High School wrestler Sidney Wheeler won a state title for the first time two years ago as a sophomore, he admitted he became a little complacent about what it would take to replicate the feat — perhaps not noticeably so to most observers, but enough to take success for granted. Wheeler believed it a matter of course that he would win state again, and he thought the second title would simply be the middle child in a high school three-peat.

  • Prep roundup: SE offense keeps foot on throttle

As long as Southeast Whitfield High School’s baseball team continues to hit the ball and score runs the way it has so far this season, it really won’t matter what the defense does.
Coach Brad Lofton still likes how the Raiders’ fielding is improving.
