Area teams headed for sectionals

With region behind them, if area high school track and field athletes want to have state in front of them they’ll need to keep pace today at the Georgia High School Association’s sectional meets.

Coahulla Creek, Dalton, Murray County, North Murray, Northwest Whitfield and Southeast Whitfield all will be represented today at various sectional meets, where some may go for first-place finishes but the bottom-line goal is to earn a trip to state. Athletes advanced to the sectional meets by finishing in the top four at their respective region meets.

In field events, the top eight finishers advance to state. In track events, the top eight finishers in both the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200 will advance; for all other running events, no finals will be held but the top two finishers in each of two heats plus the next four fastest runners regardless of heat will advance.

The boys state meets are scheduled for May 2-4 at Memorial Stadium in Jefferson, while the girls state meets are scheduled for May 9-11 at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany.

At the Class 2A Sectional B meet at Greater Atlanta Christian School, Region 7’s Murray County’s boys team will be represented by Ivan Delgado (1,600), Servio Martinez (1,600), Kyle Padgett (triple jump) and Jorge Romero (high jump), plus its 4x100 relay team. Aaron Chambers, Bobby Defore, Delgado, Padgett and Pritchett are all eligible to enter that lineup.

Murray County’s girls will be represented by Shea Pendley (shot put), Miriam Quiroz (300 hurdles), Katelyn Richardson (1,600) and Catlyn Wilson (discus), plus its 4x100 relay team. Destiny Bailey, Keona Brinkman, Chasidy Dixon, Tiffany Marker, Pendley and Quiroz are all eligible to enter that lineup.

At the Class 3A Sectional A meet at Atlanta’s Lakewood Stadium, Region 5’s Coahulla Creek’s boys will be represented by Josh Foxx (high jump, long jump, triple jump) and Cordarius Tarver (discus). The Lady Colts will be represented by Elizabeth Holcomb (400), Desiaree Sardina (shot put) and A.T. Smith (100, long jump, triple jump), plus both of their relay teams. For the 4x100, Taylor Graham, Holcomb, Brysten Pippin and Smith will go; for the 4x400 it’s Evelyn Botello, Graham, Holcomb and Nia Quinn.

At the same meet, representing North Murray’s boys are Jacob Mays (long jump), Isaac Pacheco (1,600, 3,200) and Brady Swilling (high jump, shot put). Representing the Lady Mountaineers are Megan Pittman (discus) and Erin Robinson (shot put).

Even in wet and muddy conditions, both the Dalton High School boys and girls golf teams are sharpening their games at the right time.
With the Region 7-4A tournament scheduled in two weeks, both the Catamounts and the Lady Cats finished second during play at the Fields Ferry Invitational in Calhoun on Monday. Despite the soggy conditions, Dalton’s Jacob Brown tied for medalist honors with a 2-over par 74 to lead the Cats to a 313 combined score in the six-play, four-score format. Dalton finished three strokes behind tournament winner LaFayette.

  • Wrestler of the year 2014 2 mlh.jpg All-Area Wrestling Team and Wrestler of the Year: Winning another title was the only goal for Wheeler

When Dalton High School wrestler Sidney Wheeler won a state title for the first time two years ago as a sophomore, he admitted he became a little complacent about what it would take to replicate the feat — perhaps not noticeably so to most observers, but enough to take success for granted. Wheeler believed it a matter of course that he would win state again, and he thought the second title would simply be the middle child in a high school three-peat.

  • Prep roundup: SE offense keeps foot on throttle

As long as Southeast Whitfield High School’s baseball team continues to hit the ball and score runs the way it has so far this season, it really won’t matter what the defense does.
Coach Brad Lofton still likes how the Raiders’ fielding is improving.

Neither Dalton High School baseball coach Shane Ramsey nor North Murray coach David Redmond has had much reason to complain about their offensive production this season.

As participants in an indoor sport, high school wrestlers don’t often have to consider the weather’s effects on their competitions.
