High school state meets begin today in Jefferson

Northwest Whitfield will lead the way with the most athletes qualified among area teams, but every local track and field program will be represented as the Georgia High School Association’s boys track and field state meets begin today at Memorial Stadium in Jefferson.

A dozen local boys will go for medals in the season’s final competition, with the Bruins sending the area’s only relay team plus a trio of others in individual events on the track in Class 4A competition. North Murray, which has two entrants for the Class 2A meet, is the only other local school with more than one athlete headed to Jefferson.

Northwest’s Jonathan Willman will go in both the long jump and 100-meter run, while Brody Cook competes in the 3,200 and Alex Reynolds is entered in the 300 hurdles. Willman will join Blake Heard, Jamon Horne and Jalen Lockett in the 4x100 relay.

Dalton’s Jesus Torres (pole vault) and Southeast Whitfield’s Jayro Perez (discus) will also compete in Class 4A.

In Class 3A, Coahulla Creek’s Josh Foxx (high jump) and North Murray’s Isaac Pacheco (1,600, 3,200) and Brady Swilling (high jump) are the local representatives, while Murray County’s Servio Martinez (1,600, 3,200) will compete in Class 2A.

The meets begin at noon, and finals for all field events as well as the 1,600 for all classifications are scheduled for today. The lone track event of the day won’t start until 7:30 p.m.

Pacheco, a senior, finished fifth in the 1,600 at last year’s Class 2A state meet and will be going for the fourth state medal of his high school career. He also took fourth in the 3,200 last season and was fifth in the same event as a sophomore.

Swilling is a two-time state medalist in the high jump, placing third as a junior and fifth as a sophomore.

On Friday, the focus turns to the track, with qualifying heats for running events plus the 3,200 finals for all classifications at 6:25 p.m. On Saturday, the meet will wrap up with the remaining track finals plus wheelchair competition.

The GHSA’s girls state meets are scheduled for May 9-11 at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany.

Replicating the start of last year’s Class 4A state title match, Dalton High School’s boys soccer team needed just four minutes to score its first goal at Southeast Whitfield on Friday.
The Catamounts scored five more — and again defended their crown of dominance in the sport.

Even in wet and muddy conditions, both the Dalton High School boys and girls golf teams are sharpening their games at the right time.
With the Region 7-4A tournament scheduled in two weeks, both the Catamounts and the Lady Cats finished second during play at the Fields Ferry Invitational in Calhoun on Monday. Despite the soggy conditions, Dalton’s Jacob Brown tied for medalist honors with a 2-over par 74 to lead the Cats to a 313 combined score in the six-play, four-score format. Dalton finished three strokes behind tournament winner LaFayette.

When Dalton High School wrestler Sidney Wheeler won a state title for the first time two years ago as a sophomore, he admitted he became a little complacent about what it would take to replicate the feat — perhaps not noticeably so to most observers, but enough to take success for granted. Wheeler believed it a matter of course that he would win state again, and he thought the second title would simply be the middle child in a high school three-peat.

  • Prep roundup: SE offense keeps foot on throttle

As long as Southeast Whitfield High School’s baseball team continues to hit the ball and score runs the way it has so far this season, it really won’t matter what the defense does.
Coach Brad Lofton still likes how the Raiders’ fielding is improving.

As participants in an indoor sport, high school wrestlers don’t often have to consider the weather’s effects on their competitions.
