Chris Whitfield: Unbeatens should fear the Reaper

“Came a last night of sadness, and it was clear that she couldn’t go on. Then the door was open and the wind appeared. The candles blew and then disappeared. The curtains flew and then he appeared, saying, ‘Don’t be afraid.’”

— “Don’t Fear the Reaper” by Blue Oyster Cult

Bwahahahaha! Welcome to Friday the 13th! Welcome to the dreaded day for friggatriskaidekaphobia. I didn’t make that up either. That is the actual name for the fear of Friday the 13th.

My only fear is that they will make another sorry horror movie about a little boy who drowned in a lake. Most people forget that the “Jason” character from the Friday the 13th films wasn’t the original villain in the movie. It was Jason’s mother, Mrs. Vorhees, who rammed a steel rod through Kevin Bacon’s chest and killed the rest of the counselors at Camp Crystal Lake.

There have been plenty of scary characters throughout the sports and sports entertainment genre through the years. Vince Lombardi was pretty scary to a 5-year-old kid watching NFL Films on Saturday afternoon. Ray Lewis coming out of the fog at a Ravens (a scary birdie thanks to Mr. Poe) game is intense to say the least. The Pittsburgh Penguins even have a player named Satan. Tonya Harding could have her own devious series on Showtime, and who can’t help my get chills when the lights go out and the sound of The Undertaker’s music hits in a wrestling arena.

Locally, Northwest Whitfield defensive lineman Isaiah Mack is really scary, except when he has his glasses on. Thank goodness Dalton’s Eder Mora uses his powers for good or else he would be unstoppable as a villain. It would take all of the Marvel super heroes just to have a chance against Mora.

Replicating the start of last year’s Class 4A state title match, Dalton High School’s boys soccer team needed just four minutes to score its first goal at Southeast Whitfield on Friday.

Even in wet and muddy conditions, both the Dalton High School boys and girls golf teams are sharpening their games at the right time.
With the Region 7-4A tournament scheduled in two weeks, both the Catamounts and the Lady Cats finished second during play at the Fields Ferry Invitational in Calhoun on Monday. Despite the soggy conditions, Dalton’s Jacob Brown tied for medalist honors with a 2-over par 74 to lead the Cats to a 313 combined score in the six-play, four-score format. Dalton finished three strokes behind tournament winner LaFayette.

  • Wrestler of the year 2014 2 mlh.jpg All-Area Wrestling Team and Wrestler of the Year: Winning another title was the only goal for Wheeler

When Dalton High School wrestler Sidney Wheeler won a state title for the first time two years ago as a sophomore, he admitted he became a little complacent about what it would take to replicate the feat — perhaps not noticeably so to most observers, but enough to take success for granted. Wheeler believed it a matter of course that he would win state again, and he thought the second title would simply be the middle child in a high school three-peat.

  • Prep roundup: SE offense keeps foot on throttle

As long as Southeast Whitfield High School’s baseball team continues to hit the ball and score runs the way it has so far this season, it really won’t matter what the defense does.
Coach Brad Lofton still likes how the Raiders’ fielding is improving.

Neither Dalton High School baseball coach Shane Ramsey nor North Murray coach David Redmond has had much reason to complain about their offensive production this season.

As participants in an indoor sport, high school wrestlers don’t often have to consider the weather’s effects on their competitions.
This year’s Georgia High School Association traditional state tournaments are an exception.
