Chris Whitfield: Rec leagues soon to start for baseball and softball
As the Georgia General Assembly begins its 40-day session today, political columnists, Republican leaders and newspaper editorials will call for limits on government. Whether those proclamations have merit or are detrimental to the community is a debate for another section of the paper.

Weather wipes out rest of schedule
The Dalton High School basketball games Tuesday against Ridgeland were called off, as was the wrestling tri-meet at Ringgold involving Coahulla Creek and Southeast Whitfield. No makeup dates are scheduled.

Schedules feel chill of winter
With today’s closure of Dalton City, Whitfield County and Murray County public schools, the area’s high school athletic schedule has been taken out by the cold weather as well.

Prep roundup: Three still in hunt for state duals
Rivals Dalton High School and Northwest Whitfield will meet on the wrestling mat with plenty on the line this morning at the Area 7-4A duals in Ellijay at Gilmer High, but both teams will need help in order to have a chance to earn a spot at the state tournament.
Making up ground
Southeast Whitfield’s wrestling team made a whole lot of noise as the Raiders advanced through the Area 7-4A duals and into the state meet.
Murray County boys fall against region opponent
Murray County’s boys basketball team started slow and couldn’t come back in a 61-27 loss at Pepperell on Thursday.
The Indians (1-12, 1-5 Region 7-2A) had a rough shooting night, especially in the first quarter, and trailed 23-6 when the first quarter ended.
