Weather still shuffling schedules

State wrestling delayed a week

The Region 7-4A high school basketball tournaments were pushed back to a Friday start on Tuesday.

Region 7-2A followed suit Wednesday, but Region 5-3A is still up in the air for playing games today.

Inclement weather and dangerous driving conditions have delayed the start of playoff basketball throughout northwest Georgia. Region 7-4A, which started its boys and girls tournaments Saturday at Cass High School in Cartersville, was supposed to continue play Monday, the day Region 7-2A was set to begin its games at Calhoun High School. Region 5-3A was supposed to begin Wednesday at Cartersville High School.

Dalton State College’s men’s basketball team has a game scheduled at 7:30 p.m. central time today at Faulkner University in Montgomery, Ala. The school said a decision won’t be made until this morning on whether or not to play. The team was supposed to leave Wednesday for Montgomery, but didn’t, opting to make the decision later.

On the wrestling mat, the Georgia High School Association has postponed this weekend’s scheduled state traditional tournaments until Feb. 21-22. The GHSA stated in a press release on its website (ghsa.net), that the Arena at the Gwinnett Center in Duluth was unavailable for that weekend and the GHSA “is exploring several options for alternate host sites.” A total of 13 wrestlers from Murray and Whitfield counties qualified for either the Class 2A, 3A or 4A tournaments.

Region 5-3A basketball coaches said the superintendents from the region’s school systems will make a decision today on whether to play games tonight.

The region includes Whitfield County’s Coahulla Creek and Murray County’s North Murray. Both were scheduled to play games today, with the Coahulla Creek girls playing Ringgold at 4 p.m. and the Coahulla Creek boys playing Sonoraville at 7 p.m. and North Murray boys playing Gordon Central at 8:30 p.m. North Murray’s girls are seeded fourth and have a bye in the opening round and would not play today unless a schedule change is made.

If games are called off, the tournament will begin Friday.

The GHSA is allowing regions to conclude tournaments by Monday and pushed the start of the state tournaments back a day, with girls playing first-round games Wednesday and boys playing first-round games Thursday.

In Region 7-2A basketball, the boys teams from Morris Innovative and Murray County were supposed to play today to see who would advance to the eight-team tourney field and play Calhoun in the second round. The game has been delayed until Friday, and no time is set as the coaches try to figure out a timetable to finish play by Monday.

Dalton, Northwest Whitfield and Southeast Whitfield are competing in the Region 7-4A tournaments. If they resume Friday, doubling up on Saturday is a given, with the completion of the tournament on Monday. Should the tournament not begin until Saturday, then teams will double up both Saturday and Monday.

On Monday, games at the Region 6-A tournaments — which include 15 boys and 14 girls teams — were canceled and Christian Heritage was informed its seasons were over because the region had decided to limit the number of teams which would compete to the top eight teams in the regular-season standings.

The local girls who visited the Dominican Republic last week on a mission trip through Score International tell a matching story.
Toward the end of a visit to Pasitos de Jesus, a girls orphanage in Boca Chica, the children began singing the Gospel song “Mighty to Save” to their visitors.
“It sent chills down your spine,” said Kala Franks, a rising senior at Coahulla Creek High School. “I felt they were ministering to me rather than us ministering to them.”

When Northwest Whitfield repeated as the Georgia High School Association Class 4A softball state champion last fall, that appeared to be the last time the majority of the Lady Bruins’ senior class would be teammates on the diamond.
Now, thanks to the Stump on Sports All-Star Softball Classic, five of those six seniors will reunite to play together one more time.

Isabel Salinas’ freshman season for Southeast Whitfield High School’s track and field team wasn’t up to her standards, and she really isn’t sure why it ended up that way in 2013. It could have been her injuries. It could have been not being in proper shape.
One thing Salinas, nicknamed “Izzy” by friends and coaches, does know is that her sophomore year went a lot better.

As a freshman at Northwest Whitfield High School, Seth Pierce came out of nowhere and was as dominant a pitcher as the area had. Finishing his “rookie” season with the Bruins, the left-handed Pierce led the area with nine victories — he also had one save — and showed overpowering dominance with a 9-3 record and 89 strikeouts in 73 1/3 innings. He finished his first season on the hill in Tunnel Hill with a 1.71 ERA while allowing 61 hits and 23 walks. Those numbers were also recorded against competition in a higher classification as the Bruins were playing Class 4A ball when the state had just five classifications. His performance earned him honors as 2012 The Daily Citizen All-Area Baseball Player of the Year.
