• Union County 6, North Murray 0: Cole Vaughn allowed just one earned run and struck out nine, but the Mountaineers’ defense and hitting let him down in the season-opening loss and debut of first-year North Murray head coach David Redmond, a former assistant under Steve Granger.
North Murray had just two hits, with Jonathan Cain and Blake Davis the only two Mountaineers to reach base.
Union County pitcher Lane Everett earned the complete-game shutout with nine strikeouts.
• Coahulla Creek boys 9, Ridgeland 1: Pedro Garcia is on pace to score at least 90 goals this season — although it’s definitely early.
Garcia scored five goals on eight shots on goal and also had an assist as the Colts rolled past the Panthers in the season opener for both teams.
Coahulla Creek outshot Ridgeland 29-3 as Gustavo Mendiola, Jo-an Barcenas, Adrian Rodriguez and Ronnie Vargas also scored. Martin Garcia and Rodriguez each had two assists, with Barcenas, Sadoth Fraire and Gaspar Andres each contributing one.
“It was about as well as we could play and as well as you could hope to start the season,” Coahulla Creek coach Eric Parker said. “With all of the weather, I was a little worried about exactly where we were, but I breathed a little easier tonight.”
• Ridgeland girls 4, Coahulla Creek 3: The Lady Colts outshot Ridgeland 20-9 but couldn’t find the back of the net enough to win in the season opener.
Regina Pacheco had a hat trick for Coahulla Creek, with assists coming from Ella Triplett and Hannah Grant.
• Northwest Whitfield junior varsity boys 4, Calhoun 1: The Bruins opened their season with balanced scoring and a stingy defense to top the Yellow Jackets.
Juan Navarro and Daniel Gomez each had a goal and an assist, while Nickolas Infante and Adrian Mariscal each scored in the victory.
