- North Murray High School Mountaineers
"After Deadline" sports podcast - Jan. 15, 2014 (no paywall)
The Daily Citizen sports writers Devin Golden and Chris Whitfield talk about Coahulla Creek's new football coach and select the winners from the first round matchups in After Deadline's "Greatest Sports Movie Ever Tournament" in this two-part episode. Oh yeah, and the podcast should be outside "the paywall."
Northwest takes Conasauga Cup
When Northwest Whitfield High School’s wrestling team missed opportunities for early pins against Dalton, the back end of the lineup picked up the slack.
Because of that, the Bruins were the ones picking up “the turtle.”
Prep roundup: Colts blow lead, but still get basketball win
Coahulla Creek High School’s boys basketball team held Gordon Central to 17 points in the first half, but shot less than 50 percent at the free throw line and on layups while giving away the lead in the second half.
Longtime coach, Bob Campbell, gets high honor at Bagley Middle
Hundreds of Murray County middle-schoolers at one time have called Bob Campbell their basketball coach. They probably have vivid memories of playing for him.
If the basketball court at Bagley Middle School had a memory, it would remember Campbell’s name for the hundreds of games he spent walking the hardwood for games and practices.
Now, the court won’t need to remember — it’ll just assume his name.
Local wrestling teams battle for The Conasauga Cup
For the first time in four years, each high school wrestling team from Murray and Whitfield counties is eyeing the Conasauga Cup.
Chris Whitfield: Rec leagues soon to start for baseball and softball
As the Georgia General Assembly begins its 40-day session today, political columnists, Republican leaders and newspaper editorials will call for limits on government. Whether those proclamations have merit or are detrimental to the community is a debate for another section of the paper.
But one of the things that government does well — especially on the local level here in Dalton and Whitfield County — is recreation.
Prep roundup: North Murray boys, girls both win
Despite a not-so-impressive free throw effort, North Murray High School’s girls basketball team made sure a strong start Friday equaled a win.
Weather wipes out rest of schedule
The Dalton High School basketball games Tuesday against Ridgeland were called off, as was the wrestling tri-meet at Ringgold involving Coahulla Creek and Southeast Whitfield. No makeup dates are scheduled.
However, some of the games supposed to be played Tuesday have new dates.
Schedules feel chill of winter
With today’s closure of Dalton City, Whitfield County and Murray County public schools, the area’s high school athletic schedule has been taken out by the cold weather as well.
The only exception is at Dalton High School, where the boys and girls basketball teams are expected to take on Ridgeland in a Sub-region 7B-4A matchup at 6 p.m.
A Look Ahead: Dalton-NW rivalry hits basketball court
It’s about time we get Dalton and Northwest Whitfield against one another again.
Sure, the two have faced in swimming meets and wrestling contests, but nothing has seemed quite as energetic or passionate as last October’s football classic in Tunnel Hill.
