From Staff Reports
Three former area high school players will be on a college football field close to home this weekend when Carson-Newman visits Shorter University at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Barron Stadium in Rome.
For Carson-Newman (4-1), former Dalton High School defensive back Danté Thomas and former Northwest Whitfield lineman Caleb Smith will line up opposite Shorter (0-5) wide receiver Kareem Hawkins, who also played at Dalton.
Hawkins is a senior who has six receptions for 79 yards. He may be covered by Thomas, who is a redshirt freshman and has 29 tackles and an interception while seeing action in all five games. Smith is a sophomore defensive lineman who has played in three games and has two tackles.
This will be a non-conference matchup for the two NCAA Division II programs. Carson-Newman is a member of the South Atlantic Conference, while Shorter competes in the Gulf South Conference.
