A Look Ahead: Softball ready to kick season into overdrive

We’re not even to the season openers for all the high school football teams and cross country is barely kicking, but the softball regular season already feels halfway over.

That’s because it kind of is.

Local teams in Class A and Class 4A will begin sub-region play this week and the last games of the regular season will be played in the first week of October. Dalton, Northwest Whitfield and Southeast Whitfield are in Sub-region 7B-4A, while Christian Heritage is in Sub-region 6A-A.

With a little more than a month remaining before the playoffs begin, the matchups pitting two local squads against one another are Dalton at Northwest Tuesday at 5:55 p.m. and Dalton at Southeast the same time on Thursday.

The Lady Raiders also travel to face Heritage-Catoosa Tuesday at 7 p.m., while the Lady Bruins host LaFayette Thursday at 5:55 p.m.

For Christian Heritage, a matchup with sub-region foe Mount Zion-Carroll looms on Tuesday and Darlington on Thursday.

The earliest games for local teams was Aug. 5, and in the eight-week regular season, we are already three weeks in. The last game for any local team is Oct. 2, and all region tournaments begin Oct. 5.

Regions 7-2A and 5-3A started league play last week and the week prior, respectively. In Region 5-3A, North Murray hosts Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe at 5:55 p.m. Tuesday, and Coahulla Creek hosts Sonoraville the same time. North Murray plays at Adairsville Thursday at 5:30 p.m., and Coahulla Creek hosts Sonoraville at 5:55 p.m.

In Region 7-2A, Murray County travels to Chattooga Monday at 5:30 p.m. and hosts Pepperell Thursday at the same time.

• On the volleyball court, there will be two matchups with local teams facing off.

The first is Dalton and Murray County, who will play a tri-match with Ridgeland in Chatsworth on Tuesday starting at 5 p.m. The second involves Coahulla Creek and host Southeast Whitfield, who will play a tri-match with Gilmer Thursday starting at the same time.

Northwest Whitfield High School’s baseball team has been successful this season. But at the same time, no one said success would be easy.
Several times this year, the Bruins have fallen behind early in the first few innings before answering with a rally to ensure the wins keep coming. On Friday, that formula delivered a Sub-region 7B-4A championship for the second year in a row.

Replicating the start of last year’s Class 4A state title match, Dalton High School’s boys soccer team needed just four minutes to score its first goal at Southeast Whitfield on Friday.
The Catamounts scored five more — and again defended their crown of dominance in the sport.

Dalton High School baseball coach Shane Ramsey only needed one word to sum up what he expects from this week’s three-game series with Sub-region 7B-4A foe and intracounty rival Northwest Whitfield.
“Intensity,” he said. “If you can’t get up for this series, then why are you playing?”

  • Prep Roundup: Dalton golf teams in form at Fields Ferry

Even in wet and muddy conditions, both the Dalton High School boys and girls golf teams are sharpening their games at the right time.
With the Region 7-4A tournament scheduled in two weeks, both the Catamounts and the Lady Cats finished second during play at the Fields Ferry Invitational in Calhoun on Monday. Despite the soggy conditions, Dalton’s Jacob Brown tied for medalist honors with a 2-over par 74 to lead the Cats to a 313 combined score in the six-play, four-score format. Dalton finished three strokes behind tournament winner LaFayette.

When Dalton High School wrestler Sidney Wheeler won a state title for the first time two years ago as a sophomore, he admitted he became a little complacent about what it would take to replicate the feat — perhaps not noticeably so to most observers, but enough to take success for granted. Wheeler believed it a matter of course that he would win state again, and he thought the second title would simply be the middle child in a high school three-peat.

It’s nothing new for a local high school boys soccer team to be among those in the eurosportscoreboard.com state rankings.
It is new for that team to be Morris Innovative.

  • Prep roundup: SE offense keeps foot on throttle

As long as Southeast Whitfield High School’s baseball team continues to hit the ball and score runs the way it has so far this season, it really won’t matter what the defense does.
Coach Brad Lofton still likes how the Raiders’ fielding is improving.

Neither Dalton High School baseball coach Shane Ramsey nor North Murray coach David Redmond has had much reason to complain about their offensive production this season.
    Defense is another matter.
