Prep football, A to Z

Bring on the bands, the fans and the rock-filled cans

A is for All-Area Player of the Year: Northwest Whitfield’s Isaiah Mack earned the recognition last year in his defensive tackle spot, and he returns for his senior season and a chance to garner back-to-back player of the year awards. But he’ll have some challengers from around the area, including Dalton defensive back Eder Mora, Southeast Whitfield athlete Rhett Harper and Christian Heritage quarterback Trevor Brown.

B is for Bragging Rights: There will be eight games between teams from Whitfield or Murray counties. The first is in the first week, when North Murray travels to face Southeast Whitfield Aug. 30. There’s also the three-team Sub-region 7B-4A round robin between Dalton, Northwest Whitfield and Southeast, with the Northwest Bruins hosting the Catamounts Oct. 11, traveling to face the Raiders Oct. 25 and then the Cats hosting the Raiders Nov. 1. Add in Murray County traveling to Coahulla Creek Aug. 30 then hosting Christian Heritage Sept. 6, Coahulla Creek hosting Christian Heritage Sept. 13 and North Murray hosting Coahulla Creek Nov. 1, and there’s a long list of bragging rights at stake.

C is for Calculator: And even that might not help you in figuring out the Georgia High School Association’s Class A power rankings. Even going into the final week of the regular season last year, many teams didn’t know exactly where they stood in regards to making the playoffs.

D is for Drug investigation: Last year, Cass defeated Dalton for the first time ever, beating the Catamounts at Harmon Field 35-7 behind the play of junior quarterback Brandon Etheridge, who rolled up 329 yards of total offense. He isn't likely to be a threat to the Cats or any of the Region 7-4A opponents Cass faces this year. Etheridge was charged in July with trafficking ecstasy, possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute and possession of a firearm during a felony violation of the Georgia Controlled Substance Act, according to the Cartersville Daily Tribune. In total, seven people were arrested, including Cass baseball pitcher Cade Williams, who was the winning pitcher over Northwest Whitfield in the region playoff series in the spring. Williams had signed to play baseball at LSU.

  • Wrestler of the year 2014 2 mlh.jpg All-Area Wrestling Team and Wrestler of the Year: Winning another title was the only goal for Wheeler

When Dalton High School wrestler Sidney Wheeler won a state title for the first time two years ago as a sophomore, he admitted he became a little complacent about what it would take to replicate the feat — perhaps not noticeably so to most observers, but enough to take success for granted. Wheeler believed it a matter of course that he would win state again, and he thought the second title would simply be the middle child in a high school three-peat.

  • Prep roundup: SE offense keeps foot on throttle

As long as Southeast Whitfield High School’s baseball team continues to hit the ball and score runs the way it has so far this season, it really won’t matter what the defense does.
Coach Brad Lofton still likes how the Raiders’ fielding is improving.
