Schedules feel chill of winter
With today’s closure of Dalton City, Whitfield County and Murray County public schools, the area’s high school athletic schedule has been taken out by the cold weather as well.
The only exception is at Dalton High School, where the boys and girls basketball teams are expected to take on Ridgeland in a Sub-region 7B-4A matchup at 6 p.m.
A Look Ahead: Dalton-NW rivalry hits basketball court
It’s about time we get Dalton and Northwest Whitfield against one another again.
Sure, the two have faced in swimming meets and wrestling contests, but nothing has seemed quite as energetic or passionate as last October’s football classic in Tunnel Hill.

Murray County’s girls basketball team needed someone to break a fourth-quarter tie.

Making up ground

All-Area Football Team and Player of the Year: With 'something a little extra,' Mora was a step ahead of everyone else
In the world of high school football, athletes come and go — every four years, in fact. And while the names on front of the lockers and on back of the jerseys change, a lot of the attributes stay the same among the best players. Some have speed. Some have strength. Some have intelligence. When it comes to the latter asset, Dalton football coaches and players could talk for days about the football savvy of Eder Mora, a junior who stood out most on defense — he lined up somewhere in between free safety and outside linebacker — but contributed in several roles for the second season in a row.
All-Area Cross Country Team and Runners of the Year: Fraire charted a new course; Salinas went the extra mile(s)
Cross country isn’t just about running. It isn’t just about leading a pack through what is often an obstacle course of dips and hills and bumps along the trail. It is about challenges and goals and the next chase. And for both Coahulla Creek High School senior Sadoth Fraire and Southeast Whitfield sophomore Isabel Salinas, cross country is a lot of work. But for both of them, it is also time well spent and worth all the effort.
