Whitfield hosting four state softball tourneys

Edwards Park and the Whitfield County Parks and Recreation Department are ready for some softball — quite a bit of it, in fact.

Starting this afternoon, the WCPRD will host four Dixie Softball age-group state tournaments at the Varnell venue, with local teams among those competing for championships in three of the four brackets.

In the nine-team Dixie Darlings 8U tournament, Whitfield National faces Perry Jr. League at 7 p.m. and Whitfield American faces Jones County at 9 p.m. in first-round matchups. Dalton has a bye into the second round, and will play the winner of Whitfield-Perry at 9 a.m. Saturday.

In the 10-team Dixie Angels 10U tournament, Dalton faces Marion County at 5 p.m., Whitfield National takes on Jones County at 7 p.m. and Whitfield American plays Seminole County at 9 p.m. In the seven-team Dixie Ponytails 12U tournament, Dalton faces Whitfield County at 7 p.m.

Only four teams will play in the Dixie Belles 15U tournament, none of them local. Tournament play in all four brackets will continue at least through Sunday, with some championships slated for Monday.
