MC cracks win column

Area roundup

From Staff Reports
Dalton Daily Citizen

All it took for the Murray County softball team to win its first game was an unbelievable pitching performance from Sarah Kilgore, who held Cartersville to just one unearned run in a 5-1 victory on Saturday in the Tiger Town Classic in Adairsville.

Kilgore went the distance for the Lady Indians and needed only 80 pitches — 62 for strikes — to do so. She also struck out four while walking just one and allowing four hits.

At the plate, Emily Scott led the way with two RBIs while going 1-for-3, Karli Timms went 1-for-3 with a run scored, Courtney Welch was 1-for-4 with a run and RBI and Shelby Wilbanks went 2-for-4.

The Lady Indians (1-15) failed to maintain the momentum, however, and lost their next game to Adairsville 4-2, with Karli Timms taking the loss while pitching a complete game and allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk while striking out five.

Murray scored both of its runs in the first inning, with Cayla Brock going 2-for-3 with a run scored and Brandi Norman going 1-for-3 with an RBI.

• Dalton had a tough time in the Cherokee Invitational in Woodstock Friday and Saturday, winning just one of four games while getting outscored 53-4 and losing top pitcher Jessica Gallmon, who was hurt in the Lady Catamounts’ game against Luella.

The injury forced Dalton coach Bobby Brotherton to rely on inexperienced pitching that led to a 15-0 loss to Luella, which pitched a perfect game against Dalton (2-5). Truetlen finished the Lady Cats off with a 22-0 dismantling in which Dalton managed just one hit.

Brotherton believes Gallmon’s injury — a pulled muscle in her back — is not serious and she’s considered day-to-day.

On Friday, Dalton lost to Valdosta 7-1, with Gallmon allowing just one earned run and seven hits while striking out three. Chandler McKinney went 1-for-2 with the RBI that scored Megan Behr, who finished 1-for-2, for the game’s only run.

The next game was an 8-0 loss to Eagles Landing Christian Academy in which the Lady Cats were no-hit. Gallmon took the loss, allowing eight runs (five earned) while allowing six hits, four walks and striking out three.

Dalton started out good Saturday with a 3-1 over Allatoona, with Markisha Washington going 1-for-2 with a triple, April Besley going 1-for-3, and Behr reaching base twice after being hit by a pitch and walking. She also stole a base and scored twice.

• Northwest Whitfield finished 1-2 in the Tiger Town Classic, losing to Rockmart 4-1, Dawson County 5-2 and beating Cedartown 11-4.

Casey Griffin took both losses for the Lady Bruins.

Northwest’s win against Cedartown was highlighted by a pair of two-run homers, one by Callie Thomas and the other by Taylor Staten.

Volleyball

• The Southeast Lady Raiders went 1-3 at St. Pius X’s play day, beating Dunwoody 25-17, 25-23 while losing to Class 5A’s tenth-ranked South Forsyth (22-25, 20-25), the top-ranked hosts of Class 3A (14-25, 14-25) and Our Lady of Mercy (20-25, 25-18, 18-25).

Leading the Lady Raiders was Casey Crump with 59 assists, Morgan Johnson with 17 kills, Cassey Adams with 16 kills, Emily Oliver with 14 kills, Shelby McFarland with 13 kills, Lynsey King with 26 digs and Taylor Oliver with 24 digs.

Cross country

• Dalton’s girls finished eighth and its boys 10th among 14-team fields at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga’s Powerade Invitational, the first competition of the season for both teams.

The Lady Cats’ Carina Nieto led with a 27th-place finish in 22:39 at the 5K meet, while other scoring runs came from Allison DeLay (39th, 23:26), Blanca Castillo (40th, 23:20), Paxton Plunkett (44th, 23:46) and Katarina Yi (66th, 25:17).

The Cats’ Freddy Castillo had the best finish of any Dalton runner, placing 16th in 17:34, while Christian Pineda (32nd, 18:34), Andrew Bruner (56th, 19:20), Grant Snyder (59th, 19:23) and Andrew Bruner (61st, 19:27).

• The Northwest Whitfield boys suffered without top runner Leighton Steadman — who sat out due to disciplinary reasons — finishing in 50th place out of 60 teams at The Clara Bowl Cross Country Invitational at Berry College.

Top runners for the Bruins were Aaron Saylor (182nd place, 18:56), Matthew Thompson (19:53, 274th place), Jordan Jones (316th, 20:31), Nathan Ward (338th, 20:44) and James Carter (367th, 21:20).

The Lady Bruins didn’t fare much better, finishing 45 out of 50 teams, led by Sarah Boyd (176th, 23:09), Sydney Bowman (222nd, 24:08), Natalie Piven (299, 26:43), Kayla Hooper (321st, 28:39) and Kayla Griffin (327th, 29:52).
