Fraire, Reynolds take titles at inaugural race

By Doug Hawley

Gilberto Fraire, who emerged the overall winner Saturday morning at the first Family Promise Run For Hope, has established himself as a quality runner in a short time.

“This is my first year to run,” the 21-year-old 2007 Dalton High graduate said moments after finishing the tough 5-kilometer course in 18 minutes and 2 seconds. “I didn’t know that I could run. I started running in February.”

When not running some 25 miles per week, the 5-foot-7, 132-pound Fraire helps his father, Juan, in various maintenance duties.

Tracee Reynolds, 33, another Dalton High graduate, paced the females in the 3.1-mile race at 23:44. Action started and ended at First Baptist Church of Dalton, with several challenging hills along the way.

“I run a couple of 5Ks each year,” the homemaker said. “I run about 30 miles a week.”

This marked the first overall victories for both performers.

There were 76 5K finishers and about the same number in the preliminary 1-mile walk/run sponsored by Family Promise of Whitfield County, which helps various needy groups in the area, including the homeless. Carpet Capital Running Club handled logistics for the event.
