Etowah beats Dalton twice

Etowah swept a three-way high school swim meet Thursday night, with Dalton’s boys and girls each finishing second.

Etowah took the boys meet with 133 points while Dalton had 126 and Sequoyah 60. In girls competition, Etowah had 134 points, Dalton 92 and Sequoyah 88.

Dalton, with the boys and girls team each 2-1 on the season, got state qualifying efforts from Chris Woods and the girls 200 medley relay and the boys 200 freestyle relay.

Woods swam a 1:57.86 to win the 200 freestyle in state-qualifying time. Woods also won the 50 free with a time of 52.06.

The girls 200 medley relay — Joana Rosales, Rebecca Davis, Maddie Scarborough and Maranda Storey — turned in a qualifying time of 2:00.14 and the boys 200 freestyle relay — Harris News, Chris Woods, Easton Frankenberger and Stephen Jones — earned a spot at state with a time of 1:37.32.

Maranda Storey won the 50 freestyle in 27.11 seconds and Chase Hair won the boys 1-meter diving (169.20 points) and Erin Hullender won the girls diving (113.05).

Dalton’s next meet is Dec. 2 at home against Cleveland, Tenn., and Ringgold. A Dalton Middle School meet scheduled at Marist today has been canceled due to Marist’s state football playoff game. The swim meet will not be rescheduled.

MS basketball

8th grade

• North Whitfield boys 44, Valley Point 34: Devin Gentry led the Green Waves (1-1) with 13 points while Blake Young and Logan Souther each had seven. Jonathan Willman had 18 points for the Pioneers (1-2).

• New Hope boys 40, Gladden 38: Blake Heard scored 16 points and Tanner Quarles added 12 for the Kodiaks (3-0). Martin Contreras had a game-high 18 points for Gladden, which had the game’s final shot but it bounced off the rim at the buzzer.

• Rome boys 50, Dalton 40: Alex Bautista, Jackson Dinges and Will Erwin all scored eight points as the Cougars fell to 1-1 on the season.

• Rome girls 39, Dalton 36: Maddie Howell scored 13 points and Carson Sharp added 11 for Dalton, which fell to 0-2.

• Westside girls 38, Eastbrook 13: Karlie Henson finished with a game-high 17 points to pace the victorious Lady Rockets, while teammate Autumn Blackwell added nine.

• North Whitfield 30, Valley Point 19: Alice Ann Barber’s 10-point performance led the Lady Pioneers (4-0), while teammate Mykeah Johnson followed closely behind with eight points.

Tavi Parris led Valley Point with eight points.

7th grade

• Valley Point boys 48, North Whitfield 15: Alex Clowers recorded a double-double — 10 points and 11 rebounds — to lead the Green Waves (2-0) past the Pioneers. Abraham Stanley had 12 points for Valley Point.

Andy Whisenant scored five points for the Pioneers (1-2).

• New Hope boys 42, Gladden 33: Caleb Storey pumped in 18 points and Nick Bramblett had 11 for the Kodiaks (3-0). Austin Johnson paced the Warriors with 10 points and Daniel Oliver finished with nine.

• Rome boys 54, Dalton 43: Jeffery Brown led the Cougars with 15 points and Chris Childs added 11.

• Rome girls 28, Dalton 14: Macy Knowles paced the Cougars with five points.

• Westside girls 30, Eastbrook 7: Kaley Johnson’s eight-point performance helped steer Westside (3-2) to the win, while Tiffany Robertson scored four points to top Eastbrook (0-3).

Westside’s Ashlee Huynh and Courtney Johnson each chipped in six points.

n North Whitfield girls 23, Valley Point 21: Ashley Cox scored eight points as the Lady Pioneers improved to 4-0 with a double overtime victory sealed at the free throw line.

Macy Week and Hannah Godfrey each added six points for North Whitfield.
